so my elderly cat is in the earliest stages of kidney failure :(
I had a consultation with the vet yesterday to discuss her care plan. It's the very early stages so it's a diet change and stabbing her with a fluid bag once a day. She took it like a champion for her first round
We kept asking to try to find out how this happened and what was causing her to lose so much weight if her thyroid is fine. Was it her previous food brand? Did we not bring her in soon enough? What did we fuck up???
Vet and his tech had no answers and were just like "at her age, it was going to be something failing any time now" but they also mentioned some cats live for a couple years after starting treatment, some even bounce back. The vet also said the levels of stuff in her urine are still on the low side of what's outside of normal, and she's still in very good health otherwise
I still can't stop going over in my mind all the stuff that might have caused this. I've never seen her mess with them but I have almost a dozen poisonous plants (euphorbias, pachypodiums) she might have bitten into. She'll dart outside to drink out of the planters when I water my porch garden. The first few years I had her, I only fed her dry food (I didn't learn it was bad for their kidneys until later on)
On the plus side, after just one treatment she seems steadier and more energetic. Really nervous to jam a needle that size into my cat at home but it was a very hands-on lesson, they were super patient and nice teaching us the steps and explaining how exactly everything works
Forgot to get the prescription for her goddamn supplements, though. Gotta call back for those. Lactobacillus pills to cram down her throat and some kind of powder to put in her food
