Have an interesting story about reducing gun violence.
An economist noticed that two different neighborhoods in Chicago with similar demographics can have wildly different levels of gun violence. Most years the more dangerous neighborhood had twice as many shootings.
But on characteristics like race, poverty, and schooling the two neighborhoods were very similar.
He argued that most of the violence stems from impulsive mistakes in the heat of an argument.
So the neighborhood that has more people out on the street has more chances for a prosocial neighbor to say, hey lets calm down here.
So not only do those 15 minute walkable cities with mixed residential commercial neighborhoods have lower traffic risk having more people walking around also helps lower gun violence
He also mentioned that programs that teach people about how they have fast ad hoc thinking when under pressure, and slower analytic thinking when less stressed can help people try to calm down and think things through more clearly (and thus with less violence)
