well in that case you should have kept your relationship and your wants clear with your partner instead of making them believe in something that they expected from you but got something different, it was surely an error from your part that you didn't communicate and express how you wanted the relationship to go which again she obviously didn't understand and if she would have did then there would have been no such escalation

Being frank about your needs and actually stating it is just as important as I do believe she would have thought the idea of marriage too, i mean why not just discuss that it is a open relationship or something which does not believe in ownership based relationship
