The typical acceleration that ppl lived with 40 yrs ago was *dismal* compared to plain, ordinary cars today. Everyone now is basically driving around in race cars and doesn't even realize it. Pickup trucks today are as powerful as basic 18 wheelers were then.
Engineering has come a long way in those years but the gains all went into making bloated, overweight cars go super fast rather than increasing efficiency.
