In the 1800s, Muhammad Ali Pasha, who ruled the region at the time, had a large mosque built atop the Citadel of Cairo.
That’s now the most visual feature on it. It’s interesting to see two different eras of architecture mix. And like, at first you think the mosque itself is big, and then you realize that it’s just a small thing on a much, much older and much, much larger fortress.
