I'm in the middle of a John Wayne war movie. This one, 'In Harm's Way."
I've watched several of his war movies in the last few weeks. I ordered a bunch from Amazon.
I've wondered recently what it is about Wayne's movies that attract me so much. Today I figured it out:
Patriotism.
Those were the days when men did not wonder about their gender. And neither did women. Those were the days when the good of the COUNTRY meant more to the individual than money or power or prestige or a 'name' for themselves. Liars and frauds usually never lasted more than one term in politics. Parents raised their children to be courageous, honest, patriotic, self-sacrificing for the greater good.
I remember growing up in that kind of America. I don't know if it will ever come back -- and that is why I feel so very sorry for children, teens, and even 20-somethings of today. They might never know what freedom tasted like. They might never know what America looked like.
