Ever since I joined Mastodon a couple of years ago, I’ve been thinking about how the technical choices made by social media platforms affect their character, and it’s time I put some of my thoughts out there.

To start with, I’m considering the nature of responses on different platforms, and how ‘responses as comments’ and ‘responses as posts’ imply different approaches to moderation:
