It has less to do with "the state of the economy" than it does with massive influx of inflation money though 0.25% loans and VCs. A booming economy that's not running on "free" unicorn fairy dust money will have very few useless jobs. A shitty economy that has a constant drip of zero-accountability money will still have worthless jobs; that's basically a description of what happens in communism.
