Until the introduction of these peroxidases, the lignin had been turning slowly into coal, which apparently doesn't happen any more. It seems that no fresh coal will ever again form naturally on Earth, thanks to white-rot fungi. Fascinating! (This anecdote was learned by reading "Entangled Life" from Merlin Sheldrake.)
