Buying favorable coverage is the primary reason, but people do ask their doctor. My wife often complained about it when she was working in a clinic. It was a common occurance for people to adamantly demand inappropriate medicine that they saw on TV. Then she had to spend extra time to determine if their symptoms were geneuine or imagined to fit the advertised solution and try to research the safety of the newest wonder drug, which is difficult given the level of BS published by the drug companies.
