Scott Zimmerman: "To me, the basic concept that we need to get through to everybody is the body is a solar collector, and it depends on that energy to do things that you can't do just by eating some kind of steak or a potato.
"You know, it is the largest energy input into the body when you're outdoors. From what I believe, based on the data we've gotten from some of the melatonin data, is that when you go out to the beach and you sit there on the beach, you're basically building up this response of melatonin from all your cells.
"And then when you leave the beach all of a sudden that drops, and you get a kind of a hangover, a little bit of excess melatonin. You have that kind of, 'Why am I sleepy when I come home from the beach? Why am I sleepy when I do an exercise? Why am I sleepy when I do a cold water immersion right afterwards?'
"Because you're kicking up the hormonal response within the body. And the body appears to always be regenerating an excess of melatonin, because it is such a good antioxidant. And that tail off is what you feel when you're feeling that kind of sleepiness sensation during the middle of the day.
"Again, don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking circadian. It's there. I'm just saying it's more of a wish list than a 'should be determining everything we do in our life'-type thing, which some people like to assign. So that's just my opinion."
