As they were flying, they used Jupiter and Europa as an analog for Didymos and Dimorphous to test the smart nav.
The smart Nav was necessary, because there was not enough time to target the spacecraft before impact. It had to autonomously find the Dimorphous and aim at it, using software developed for missiles.
