Question for people who have an overhead HVAC vent like this but are too short to adjust it by hand: how do you adjust it?

Right now I just keep a crummy old screwdriver in my office and either push on the handle to close or wedge it in to open. It’s janky as all heck and I want something better, up to and including replacing the vent with something better designed.
