Some critics suggest that Western leaders continue to act as they do because they hope that no-one will call their bluff and look behind the façades.
A scarier, but just as likely, alternative view is that their leaders are so oblivious that they truly believe that these façades are supported by more than just some creaky scaffolding.
Either way, they will inevitably push things too far and the reality will become obvious to all.
