I was working at Google in 2004, and someone pointed out that "Don't be evil" was less stringent than "Don't do evil things", because there was a certain number of evil things you could do before you were evil.

And yet at the time it was the only place I'd worked where you could stop a meeting dead by asking about the moral consequences of our actions.

Even by 2009, when I left, this was starting to evaporate.
