The general public (as in, the people that are NOT on Pleroma or Firefish or Peertube or Pixelfed for example) do not want to be here.
Twitter did not achieve critical mass until the influencers and celebrities showed up. Up until then it was a niche service with very few users.
Things might change with Threads and Tumblr and possibly BlueSky at some point, but they will see their view of the Fediverse through their service's rose colored glasses, just like Mastodon users do today.
