Back in my salad days, I spent almost 2 years working in the WaPo editorial division. I sat between the people who edited the editorials that appear every day in the paper.
A big part of my job was to read the dozens and dozens of emails, phone message transcripts, and handwritten letters to the editor. This wasn't some lofty position: I was basically tasked with separating the letters that possibly had a salient point to make from those that were extended screeds. And I had to contact the readers who wrote in to make sure they were real people, instead of anonymous people like Tsu Doh Nimh.
Sometimes, I had to tiptoe on eggshells into Meg Greenfield's office and present her with the selection of political cartoons for the day. Other times, I was sent with cab fare to Mrs. Graham's house in Georgetown, with an urgent editorial.
I had the privilege of working alongside some of the best editors I've ever met. I mean, these people could take your words and make them sing.
Not infrequently, there were disputes between and among the editorial writers and WaPo senior editors; but those were almost always resolved before anything went to press. It's hard to imagine there aren't more resignations forthcoming.
