This passage was written in 1911 by a superb Catholic educator named Mother Janet Stuart, but it could have been written yesterday. It is spot on and so perfectly expressed. What a wonderful mind and heart she had. It gives me strength to keep clinging to the true vine!!
"The minds of the young cannot expect to be carried along by a Catholic "public opinion"; there will be few to help them, and they must learn to stand by themselves, to answer for themselves, to be challenged and not afraid to speak out for their faith, to be able to give "first aid" to unsettled minds and not allow their own to be unsettled by what they hear. They must learn that.....their position in the world is far more akin to that of Christians in the first centuries of the Church than to the life that was lived in the middle ages when the Church visibly ruled over public opinion. Now, as in the earliest ages, the faithful stand in small assemblies or as individuals amid cold or hostile surroundings, and individual faith and sanctity are the chief means of extending the kingdom of God on earth."
