my kid and I spent the first, oh, two months constantly wondering out loud why they’re called guinea pigs, but now I’ve realized it’s because they squeal, eat constantly, and poop everywhere!
I tried fabric bedding but couldn’t keep up. Now I’m doing a thick layer of shredded paper with lots of hay and greens. When it’s dirty I scoop it all out into a big bucket and take it to the compost pile.
I meant to get two piggies but I couldn’t leave one alone in the pet store so now I have three females.
Here’s their current habitat. They need hidey holes, mostly, so they’ve got two wooden huts and a couple of cardboard hideouts. They love to run *into* the pile of hay and eat it from underneath, so I’ve started leaving their fresh greens propped up against something, so they can hide and snack.
Right now they love grass with green seed heads and clover!
