I used to think that a big flashlight was best used by people with dogs (who may run away) or by those on larger plots of land, but I now think that a large flashlight is useful even in an urban environment -- an extremely bright light is disorienting and should be a part of everyone's layered home defense plan.

My personal favorite large, high Candella flashlight is the Streamlight 88075. Not cheap, but worth the investment for a quality light.
