The Armenian cucumbers are *much* happier now that they've grown enough I can strap them to the wall and get their leaves off of the ground!
I suspect the problem was earwigs as there are some around. Now that they can't just walk onto the leaf, they have to deal with the spiky/hairy stalk which seems to be beyond them at this point.
