Having your own modeling experience is super valuable. It makes the utility of the printer much greater. FreeCAD and blender are great and there are loads of good tutorials to learn more (recommend mangojelly on YouTube for FreeCAD)
Do you have a budget in mind?
Given your open preferences, I would not suggest a Bambu. I’ve got one but it’s not open at all and I prefer the control and customization I get from my open source klipper printer. I’m working on replacing my Bambu with a second open printer this year.
Consider getting something enclosed if your budget allows, it will make it much easier to get into printing styrene or polycarbonate filaments for different applications.
I’ve heard the Creality K2 are still easily root able and have at least somewhat more standard parts than the Bambu machines.
