May have figured it out. The thermostat can connect only over 2.4 GHz to Wi-Fi. When you configure it via an iPhone app, there's a note that says to connect the iPhone only to 2.4 GHz…I have all my networks named identically, so that won't work. So I've created a 2.4 GHz guest network to test this theory.
