This is a discussion of the "Doctrine of Signatures" as a mnemonic device used in preliterate societies to help identify plant medicines.
In brief, it's not used to identify the medicinal properties of unknown plants, but simply to help memorise and identify plants which are already in use for a particular ailment.
It's a shame this system is so maligned by the conceits of modern people, since it still has a great deal of utility for it's intended purpose.
