As I read the article, it does not claim that humans are alone in consciousness, or that human brains are special when it comes to it. It seems to me like you let the materialist bias color your reading of that (in my understanding, Erik Hoel would argue that all animals with a brain are conscious).
It's actually materialism that has set humans apart in therms of consciousness.
