Increased GDP seems to be the main reason. Every Western nation is in huge debt. Their talking point as to why it isn't a big deal is "debt to GDP" metric. If the GDP falls, the system collapsed on itself.
In Canada, real estate is about 15-20% of GDP. It's the largest sector of the economy. Without the crazy immigration numbers we have, there's a good chance the whole bubble would pop.
