I’m obviously not gonna do a breakdown of every single #BestAnimeGirlTourney match (it’s not my baby, I’m just a friend of the family), but I just HAVE to do a writeup on Osaka’s ridiculously ludicrous tournament run made out of insanity and pure crazy.
Of course, Osaka started out the contest not only by losing, but by arguably being outshone and upstaged by 4th place finisher Kobeni, due to Nirty Digger absolutely carpet-bombing the match thread with pictures of his Waifu (on that note, it’s a crying shame that Chainsaw Man ended up without a tournament rep). Of course, Nagatoro was the girl who won that particular Royal Rumble match, well ahead of Osaka. In fact, at this point the only thing Osaka had going for herself was the fact that this particular RR match generated a remarkable amount of interest and votes, suggesting that even a 2nd place finish in this group might have been a decently good performance.
And indeed, the high vote totals of that RR match was the very thing that secured Osaka a shot at qualifying for the tournament – on the basis of a coin flip. Our tournament host SuperSnekFriend *wanted* supreme snek girl Miia to get the last tournament slot, but decided to flip a coin to decide what would happen, and the result was a qualifying match between Miia and Osaka. Of course, Osaka ended up winning said match with relative ease, indicating that Nagatoro’s 4-pack was indeed pretty strong, and that Osaka herself might be roughly on par with Liru, the 4th strongest Fluffy Tail rep. Under normal circumstances, that kind of power level might have been enough for Osaka to make it into round 2, with some luck/favorable match-making. However, Osaka had the misfortune of being seeded dead last, and thus would face tournament favorite Megumin as her round 1 opponent.
That match ended up marking the true beginning of Osaka’s legendary tournament run. At this point we all know what happened: Osaka absolutely shocked Megumin early on, but the KonoSuba girl struck back and seemed about to run away with the match as everyone had expected when Osaka AGAIN stunned everyone and fought her way back into the lead once more. This was a match that had it all, it ended up extremely close, the vote totals were huge, the final result was a giga-upset, and there was even massive controversy due to P exposing a Cheater who supported Osaka.
Even if Osaka had lost in round 2, this one match by itself would have made her one of biggest stories of the tournament. And that was certainly the outcome I expected, since I chalked up Osaka’s win to Megumin being a total Fraud who benefited from the nomination system and was completely untested in terms of actual tournament matches prior to facing Osaka. Meanwhile, Tatsumaki was someone who had looked extremely impressive both when she absolutely DOMINATED her Royal Rumble 4-pack, as well as when she doubled Fedi icon Lain in round 1.
Then match 2 begun, and Osaka not only steamrolled Tatsu early on, but unlike Megumin, the green-haired Esper proved completely incapable of mounting a real comeback, turning what I had expected to be a no-brainer Tatsu walkover win into Osaka’s easiest, most boring triumph of the tourney. Of course, as just kept happening, all the stars were aligning in the tard wife’s favor during this match – Tatsumaki’s Fedi Husbando suffered an injury right before the match that kept him offline for a week, and as if that wasn’t enough, the change in the voting system (partly due to OSAKA’S OWN CHEATING) almost certainly ending up benefiting Osaka, as the write-in voting system greatly favored her rabid supporters, who weren’t shy about asking people for support. Their meme game was also on point – the moment I saw poastoak’s pic of Osaka shooting Tatsu, I knew the OPM heroine was in trouble.
So Osaka had now made it to the quarterfinals, just like the legendary vidya girl contest underdog Shanoa had managed. However, Osaka’s victory over the #1 seed AND her disturbingly effortless win over another heavy hitter already suggested far greater ambitions than the Castlevania girl’s 2-game stunners. And quarterfinals opponent Konata, while strong, and even tapping into much of the same Meme Girl, Oldfag-energy as Osaka, hardly seemed like an insurmountable obstacle for someone who had already twice done the impossible. Sure enough, while the match ended up being close, Osaka clutched it out.
