Excepting a handful of Reconstruction amendments and some civil rights laws, democracy has always been tenuous in the United States. The original Constitution ceded political power to white male property owners. SCOTUS has consistently deferred to white male property owners, even undermining the Reconstruction amendments to the Constitution to do so.
There was slavery. The Black Codes. Genocide of Indigenes. Know-Nothingism. Jim Crow segregation. Night Riders. Anti-Asianism. Male chauvinism. Two Red Scares. Concentration camps for undocumented citizens. Knee-jerk deportations. Surveillance of and retaliations against social reformers and civil rights and student movement demonstrators. Concentration of wealth in the 1%. Supremacist Reaganism — with bipartisan support — for the last 50 years.
Sitting here in the middle of it all, I have to ask: how can democracy in the US be in any more peril now than it ever has been? The crisis is centuries in length. Trump is not the exception, but the predictable outcome.
