The 13th century Sufi poet, Rumi, is credited with “The Three Gates of Speech” — & while I generally give journalists, reporters, & editors a pass on the third gate, the first gate is both fundamental and imperative, and the second is arguably essential:
“Before you speak [or write], let your words pass through three gates.
At the first gate, ask yourself, ‘Is it true?’
At the second gate ask, ‘Is it necessary?’
At the third gate ask, ‘Is it kind?’”
