Many species co-evolved to co-opt toxic properties of plants to incorporate as defense mechanisms of their own. Insects especially. Heck, pretty flowers, good food, etc., ensure that bipedal species will spread them around and protect them from other predators in a mutually beneficial relationship. In some ways, it's the plants that are domesticating other species.
