My first kitty, Smudge, developed hyperthyroidism when he was about ten. After he got the proper meds he lived for another decade, so here's hoping Pica breaks that record!
Strange question but: did Pica become a much more ferocious mouser? The first sign we had that anything was going on with Smudge was that he suddenly started killing and eating mice like he was getting paid to do it, when before he'd been lackadaisical at best about mice. Then once he was medicated, he lost all interest in mice to the point that they could run over his paws and he'd ignore them completely.
