I do know how emotional I become walking around various supermarkets trying to find food I can afford. I know that recently I had to choose between my wife and I having glasses because we could not both afford them. I have to watch my thermostat like a hawk to maintain a temperature that is comfortable for the two of us and our two rescue greyhounds. My credit score can barely pull its pants up because I defaulted on loans I no longer had the money to pay. I’m a pariah in the opinion of this government because I’m on benefits; a state pension for which I worked over 54 years, I only stopped working at age 69 when I fractured my L1 vertebra and was awarded Attendance Allowance. In spite of these benefits I cannot afford holidays, days out are infrequent as is any sort of entertainment. The career I chose in the Ambulance Service and latterly a paramedic was not well paid, but I am satisfied that it was worthwhile. Now it seems the government would like to help me out with the assisted dying bill. I don’t expect anyone to pay my way, all I ask is a reasonable pension appropriate to the economy, nothing more. If there’s money for an arms race, surely there’s money for a country in decline. Our roads and infrastructure are archaic but of course the movers and shakers don’t worry as their jets are unaffected.
