why is digital online identity always tied to an account with a remote service? like we understand in historical terms how that happened but is that really the best way to do things? surely someone could figure out an asymetric key system that allows user control of their online identites without requiring users to know all the intricacies of key management

we're imagining a system that's basically like a password manager but instead of storing passwords but instead of passwords it stores digital identities/profiles, with a corresponding system for servers to authenticate based on public keys attached to such identities. is there some obvious flaw to such a system we're missing?
