The sense is entirely one of a "reality of dream." The description of the sunset, the light and landscapes are heightened, as if you are rendered hyper-sensitive. These trump the rain and the gloom - night of this world giving way to a reality beyond physical sense.
You ache "toward the east" - usually a place of sunrise, and a place of awakening for you, it seems. But equally, a place where the person of whom you speak may well be sleeping already. Dreaming you awake suggests almost being dragged into that other's dream, like a shared consciousness. The "ache" indicates you wish to be there
