In defense of the scientists, I'm sure they're not trying to be cynical and lifeless so much as just objective - trying to describe only what they can see, and to not make assumptions.
Which isn't to say I don't think people sometimes worry so much about "anthropomorphizing" non-human animals that they go too far in the other direction. Humans, also being animals, don't have some wholly disjoint set of experiences that aren't relevant to the rest of the animal kingdom!
