Exactly. More private than Mastodon's as the message is encrypted, yes. But a lot of the metadata still persists (from who to who, when, message length). :)
It'd be interesting to have a way of "upgrading" encrypted DMs into "tursted DMs" where the whole blob of data is encrypted with a secret only the two parties know. You'd still see something going on, but couldn't make out any of the other details. Only the two parties would then be able to decrypt the actual information and thus see the message in full.
