Well thank you TF!
Gab started out maybe on a crappy open source code base in either Perl or PHP. I wish to say the latter.
Their original programmer struggled to keep it running.
Then in 2019, Torba had Gab switch to Mastodon. It was NOT a FORK of it. It was stock Mastodon with changed logos.
He federated with as many service hosts as possible and in those days it was nearly all of the Fediverse. Block lists were not yet in vogue by the trannies of Fedi.
Gab / stock Mastodon went live 4-July-2019.
Almost straight away, they began mucking with the code, mostly the UI. But they added groups. That was a quick addition, which worked.
Increasingly, Fedi service hosts began to block Gab. They Torba cried that Fedi was nothing but anime and loliporn.
But the truth is this: Being federated, Gabbers began porting to other Fediverse servers, i.e., opting out of Gab via account migration, and taking their followers with them since that is a feature of Mastodon / Fediverse / ActivityPub protocol.
So Torba quickly de-federated blaming loliporn and anime because Gab was bleeding users. That happened around October 2019.
I know these things because I was on Gab from Day 2 of launch, August 15 or 16, and I have a good memory.
Today's Gab is a custom Mastodon and not a true fork. As I recall, there were complaints that Gab / Torba did not publish code changes publicly.
