the celebrity version isn't that new, but I think the fact that you see the phenomenon extended to more everyday people might be.
That said, I got marriage proposal letters from readers when I was a hardware reviewer for a very utilitarian tech publication many years ago, so maybe it really is just a change of medium rather than of message.
