Honestly, I don't know whose problem your underdog solves. If I lived near any of the disaster zones popping up all over the globe, I'd be kind of embarrassed to harp on it. A side-note about some authors not realizing the difference between analysis and training would have been less of an over-reaction to the over-reaction.
Also... if you want to see the result of making text appealing by algorithm, look at the pop music industry which used less energy-hungry tools to accomplish the same thing a generation ago. You can tune into current game shows with young 20-30yo contestants and watch how they know 70s and 80s music better than 2000s and even 2010s. But writers can get similar results if they climb into the higher-wattage, extended-cab Humvee version that. The result is addictive content that isn't as memorable (or as note-worthy, it seems).
