Your analogy doesn't work, nobody self-teaches themselves how to do a root canal. Coding is routinely self-taught. Many open source devs got their start by attempting a pull request before they were fully comfortable with the language or code base, and then getting mentored through it. We all start somewhere. Growing the contributor base is critical.
