Whether you agree with what Ulbricht did or not (and I know many here do), the way we treat prisoners is pretty fucked up. Just about every study ever done shows that punitive measures aren't nearly as effective as reformative ones, but we still punish the fuck out of criminals.

I once heard someone say that you judge a civilization by how it treats the lowest among them, not the highest, and it's stuck with me since. The way we treat our prisoners says more about the rest of society than it does the prisoners.
