Had a diagnostic imaging procedure the other day (all fine, baseline stuff), and chatting with the med tech, turned out both her husband and father were alive due to medical miracles: the husband, gene therapy for a condition often fatal in childhood; the father, cancer, a form that requires literally a pill these days. As hard as it is to be alive today, there are people alive because of this sort of advance. (Much less nutrition, hygiene, etc.)
