This has always been a cop out for the Mastodon project because many talented devs, including myself, have offered to volunteer their time to improve the safety features of Mastodon but the toxicity of their dev community has run off many a quality dev, or in my case, have just been ignored.
The Mastodon repo is jam packed with features people have been willing to put the time into to implement but have been unilaterally rejected by Eugene himself for personal reasons.
So this thought that safety features are not present because of financial reasons is a straight up lie.
