I already knew that back in the day, the top vote getter became President and the second vote getter became vice President. At some point that change to President picks his own VP.
What I didn't know is that the Sedition Act forbade criticizing Congress and the President, but not the VP. Congress and the President were both of the Federalist party, and united in wanting the insults to stop. But let them keep going for the VP.
