I’ve met Americans who are embarrassed of America. I think your “country concept” is similar to your “self concept“, and it’s a mistake to be overly ashamed or proud of yourself or your country. Everyone, and every country has mistakes and triumphs, and the only truthful way to live is to own both and be humble and confident. Anyone who experienced what you did probably would’ve done what you did, and vice versa, so merciful judgement is wise.
