Maggots, like alligators, prefer rotted meat. This is because rotted meat is already partially digested. (The fact that we humans consider this "gross and disgusting" is irrelevant.)
Maggots are terrific tools in cases of gangrene. They have the seemingly miraculous ability to clean out a gangrenous wound. Perfectly. They leave the wound absolutely clean. This is because they will not eat healthy tissue, only rotting tissue.
