Troy (2004
Trojan (2004), directed by Wolfgang Petersen, is an epic historical drama film based on Homer's Iliad, which chronicles the Trojan War, one of the greatest conflicts in Greek mythology. The movie stars Brad Pitt as the legendary Greek warrior Achilles, Eric Bana as the Trojan prince Hector, and Orlando Bloom as Paris, the man who sparks the war by abducting Helen (Diane Kruger), the Queen of Sparta, from her husband, King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson).
The film explores the complex themes of honor, love, pride, and betrayal as the Greeks, led by King Agamemnon (Brian Cox), lay siege to the city of Troy in retaliation for Paris's actions. The standout character is Achilles, portrayed as a near-immortal warrior seeking eternal glory on the battlefield, despite his internal struggles and desire for meaning beyond the conflict. Hector, a noble and courageous prince, faces Achilles in one of the film’s most iconic and tragic duels.
The movie is known for its grand scale, impressive battle sequences, and lavish set designs, capturing the intensity of war and the emotional weight of the characters’ fates. It balances sweeping action with deep character development, making it both visually spectacular and dramatically engaging.
Though the film takes creative liberties with the source material, Troy was generally well-received for its performances, particularly Brad Pitt’s portrayal of Achilles, as well as its production design and cinematography. The epic battle scenes, including the siege of Troy and the duel between Achilles and Hector, are considered highlights.
