Thinking about how we evaluate candidates, we might imagine the job is to predict future success. However, the best predictors of that are probably socioeconomic status, height, etc. Those just correlate really well with success in every field of life, so I guess academic success too. We correctly exclude those because directly using them would be horribly biased, but does this just make us search for measures that are obfuscated correlates of them?
I am increasingly feeling that all acts of evaluation are so biased and problematic that we should just stop. Perhaps not a very popular view in academia.
