I think sarcasm is assumed to be mean spirited when it’s not always the case at all. Some of us communicate with jokes and sarcasm because it feels more comfortable than what’s considered “deep, meaningful” conversation. There are people who want to be sarcastic but are really bad at it (e.g., Ted Cruz) and maybe that’s part of it?",
