Noam Chomsky pointed out long ago that those who ascend to powerful positions do so only after a lengthy process of ideological conditioning and meticulous selection, often orchestrated through the education system. Only the most compliant—those most loyal to established power—reach the top. Once there, they are tasked with maintaining the system’s seamless operation.

However, there is a contingency for when things go off track, as they sometimes do. This occurs when someone in a high position steps out of line and acts in ways that defy the power elite, prioritizing humanity’s interests over those of authority. When this happens, action must be taken.

Such individuals are routinely subjected to public smear campaigns—as a stark reminder to others in power to keep their consciences restrained.

This is the lens through which to view the recent “unspecified allegations of misconduct” against Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, made by someone within his office.

Khan has called for arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Legally, his hands were tied: both leaders meet the criteria for war criminals, given their use of starvation as a tool of warfare.

What is remarkable, however, is that the judges responsible for authorizing these warrants have stalled for six months, despite the overwhelming evidence and urgency of the situation.

If you’ve been wondering why this delay persists, now you have the answer: they are keen to avoid facing the same fate as Khan.

The ruling power elite possess countless ways to dismantle any individual perceived as a threat to their agenda.

Consider how Julian Assange has been imprisoned for years on fabricated “espionage” charges.

Khan’s situation—he’s also being smeared as an antisemite by Israel—is yet another lesson for those who aren’t so subdued by the system that the idea of doing the right thing never crosses their mind.

The message they’re intended to receive is clear:

Don’t confront power—because power will crush you.
